Pilot & Feasibility Grant Program

Michigan Center for Diabetes Translational Research (MCDTR)
Application Due Date: Tuesday, April 4, 2023 (5:00 PM)

2023 MCDTR Pilot and Feasibility Grant Program

PLEASE NOTE: This “CALL FOR PROPOSALS” is ONLY for the Michigan Center for Diabetes Translational Research(MCDTR). The Michigan Diabetes Research Center (MDRC) timeline will remain the same.

Purpose

This Pilot and Feasibility (P/F) Grant Program is sponsored by the Michigan Center for Diabetes Translational Research (MCDTR).  Its purpose is to promote research in diabetes by new and established investigators at the University of Michigan and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The ultimate goal of the program is to accelerate the pace of research and enable awardees to generate sufficient preliminary data for successful applications for major research funding from the NIH or other national granting agency.

Grant proposals must focus on type 2 translational research in diabetes: the translation of research advances into widespread clinical or community practice. The research may focus on the identification of barriers to widespread adoption of new science and the testing of interventions to overcome those barriers. Applications addressing social determinants of health and health equity are encouraged.

Eligibility

Individuals who have instructional, research, or clinical faculty positions at the University of Michigan and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are eligible to apply as Principal Investigators for P/F proposals.  Eligible applicants are: a) new investigators beginning careers in diabetes-related research; b) established investigators who have not previously worked in diabetes research but wish to focus their expertise on diabetes; or c) established diabetes investigators who propose innovative research in diabetes that represents a clear departure from their ongoing research.  This new direction cannot be an extension or outgrowth of research currently being undertaken by the applicant.  Priority will be given to applications from early-stage investigators beginning careers in diabetes-related translational research.

Proposals

P/F proposals should be for one year of support, with requested funding up to $50,000 direct costs.

Each proposal will receive extramural peer review by recognized experts in the area of the proposal. Funding of P/F grants that receive favorable review is anticipated to begin August 1, 2023.

P/F grant awardees are queried annually by the MCDTR administrative staff and are required to provide information on the publications and funding that stem from the P/F grant as this information must be reported to NIH. P/F grant awardees are also expected to present their research at our Annual MCDTR Diabetes Symposium generally held each year in the spring.
