Continuous Glucose Monitoring Laboratory

Michigan Diabetes Research Center (MDRC)

The Continuous Glucose Monitoring Laboratory provides the in vivo and continuous assessment of blood glucose concentrations in conscious, unrestrained rats and mice by radiotelemetry. This technology minimizes the stress of handling rodents and permits a detailed analysis of glucose fluctuations within normal feeding patterns and across extended time-frames. To use this technique, an arterial telemetry probe (aortic arch for mice; descending aorta for rats) is implanted. These probes transmit continuous, real-time, blood glucose measurements in mice and rats. This new experimental tool allows us to collect data over a 28d (or longer) period 24h/day, 7 days/wk with minimal animal handling and blood draws and thus minimal stress (a serious confound for assessment of glucose homeostasis).

Surgery and Testing

Service/Rate

Intra-abdominal implantation of radio- transmitter device for recording continuous, real-time, blood glucose measurements and body temperature & activity from carotid artery catheter and general activity 24/7 up to 45 total on-days of recording.
