The CDI Training and Mentoring Program kicked off August in the best way possible, with ice cream! The team hosted an ice cream social on August 1 where participants kept cool with Washtenaw Dairy ice cream while Dr. Ormond MacDougald shared expert tips on building powerful, professional networks. In addition to the sweet treats, attendees enjoyed a fun, yet semi-competitive game of Networking Bingo, with the first three winners receiving prizes.

Ready for your next dose of career inspiration? Join us Friday, August 22 at 1:00 pm in the NCRC South Atrium for "PhD --> MSL: Leaving the Lab, Not the Science" with Dr. Lucy Hinder. Dr. Hinder, a medical science liaison at Rhythm Pharmaceuticals, will help attendees discover how to navigate exciting career transitions while maintaining their scientific passion. This session is perfect for anyone curious about paths beyond traditional lab roles.

Finally, we are excited to spotlight some of our rising stars. Our trainees are advancing research as first authors on innovative, groundbreaking research:

  • Jessica Maung (MacDougald lab) Effects of FGF21, soluble TGFBR2, and environmental temperature on metabolic dysfunction in lipodystrophic mice

  • Jin Li (Soleimanpour lab) LONP1 regulation of mitochondrial protein folding provides insight into beta cell failure in type 2 diabetes

  • Jiaao Su (Affinati lab) Control of physiologic glucose homeostasis via hypothalamic modulation of gluconeogenic substrate availability
